Q&A

Q. Why should I take a childbirth class?

A. Think about it this way, if you were competing in a triathlon you would take the time to train and you might hire a swim coach and purchase a nice bike, shoes, wet-suit, etc.  Childbirth is an athletic event and a profoundly more significant life experience than a triathlon.  The way you take care of yourself during pregnancy and the the way you give birth has a lasting impact on your health, your baby’s health, and your confidence as a parent.  It is the biggest physical and hormonal event of a woman’s life!  If you have high expectations for your birth experience, you will need education and a supportive doctor or midwife to help you prepare.

Q. Women have been giving birth since the beginning of time.  Won’t my body just know what to do?

A. Your body absolutely knows what to do!  The thing is, your birth environment may or may not allow your body to do what it needs to do.  Also, in modern America, most of us are not as in-tune with our bodies as we think we are.  We need to re-learn how to trust our own natural processes.  In my classes, we spend a significant amount of time preparing ourselves and our birth environment to facilitate the natural process of labor, birth, and breastfeeding.

Q. My doctor tells me I may need to have a C-section.  Would a class still be helpful for me?

A. Yes!  Even with a planned Cesarean, you can prepare your body for the most natural, gratifying experience possible under the circumstances.  You may even discover a way to safely avoid a c-section by learning when a cesarean is really necessary and how to advocate for your right to try other options first.
